Colorful fish in a well thought out aquarium is a wonderful and relaxing sight. It is a tremendous task to choose which breed of fish you will keep in your fish tank because there are so many beautiful and colorful fish to choose from.
So how do you choose?
Most people choose on beauty and then on how easy they are to keep, because care and maintenance are factors that must be added in to the mix.
Lots of fish keepers seek to recreate the relaxing feeling of warm sunshine illuminating tropical waters full of stunning beautiful fish. Beauty of course is in the eye of the beholder and if you were to ask any fish hobbyist they would have their own top ten of their most beautiful and colourful fish.
Here is a list of some of the most colorful fish on the planet.
The fancy guppy fish and especially the male have been bred to be a super colorful fish. There are many variations such as golden, orange, red, blue, purple, and even black. Guppies have long, trailing tails with beautiful colorful patterns.
The mandarinfish is found in the Pacific from Australia to the Ryukyu Islands. It is a small, brightly-colored member of the dragonet family, which is popular saltwater fish.

The emperor angelfish is found in the reef beds of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, from the Red Sea to Hawaii and the Austral Islands.
Swordtails are tropical freshwater fish. They come in various color types but the most popular are the bright red-orange with a black tail.
The Siamese fighting fish, are probably the most colorful fish of all tropical freshwater fish, with a wide variety of colors such as blue, teal, red, purple, green, and white.
A Lionfish is noted for its extremely long and separated spines. They usually have a striped appearance of red, green, navy, brown, orange, yellow, black, maroon, or white. It is also referred to as the Turkey Fish, Scorpion or Fire Fish.
The clown trigger fish is found in the tropical Indo-Pacific reefs.
The cardinal tetra has a bright blue stripe running the length of its body. Below the blue stripe is a thick band of bright red.
Mantis shrimp are marine crustaceans and not of course fish but they are an outstanding beauty. They are named purely on their physical resemblance to both the praying mantis and the shrimp. They can be found in a variety of colours, from shades of browns to bright neon colours. They love tropical and sub-tropical marine and spend most of their life tucked away in burrows and holes.

The moorish idol, is found in Indo-Pacific tropical to subtropical reefs and lagoons.
Lemon Cichlid is a narrow-bodied colorful fish that comes from South America. The eye is large and black and has a vivid bright yellow body and fins.
Clownfish has about twenty-nine species and depending on species, they are overall yellow, orange, reddish, or blackish, and many show white bars or patches. They also vary in length from ten centimetres to around eighteen centimetres.
The Parrot fish that is named because of its bird-like beak use their beaks to crush and eat the small invertebrates that live in coral. Initially in their life cycle they are a dull red, brown or grey, while as the head to death their color becomes vividly green or blue with bright pink or yellow patches.
A nudibranch is a member of taxonomic clade rather than a fish and are often called “sea slugs“, they are among the most colorful creatures on earth.
